Sushi Hiro 寿司 ヒロ @ Jakarta

This is a chain restaurant, so the standard may vary from store to store. But the location for this particular one has more than food.

The Gedung Sarinah mall that Sushi Hiro is located in has a few art installations inside the main foyer. Like these Balinese ladies in the traditional Indonesia painting style, upon closer inspection then you would realise they are actually made from wire mesh.

President Barack Obama recalled how Sarinah was the tallest building in the city during the four childhood years he spent living in Jakarta. The mall was the first skyscraper to be built in Jakarta as well as the first modern department store in the city. Recently refurbished, the place looked modern and brand new, with a private art museum housed in there too.

But I digressed. We were here for a quick lunch. And the interior was just like any other Japanese restaurant. We quickly ordered from the thick and pretty comprehensive menu, with selections from all categories of Japanese cuisine – yakitori, tempura, washoku, sushi and sashimi to say the least.

So if you are looking for a Halal Japanese sushi restaurant, this chain of washoku diners would satisfy your cravings for some sushi and sashimi in Jakarta. The standard is about the same as Sushi Tei in Singapore, nothing more. Service is quite bad because it is a very popular location – they keep missing our orders, and then tell us that they are not available. Therefore I would not recommend bringing your clients here.
