Yellow croaker noodles, scallion oil noodles, and crab roe noodles – some of the noodles dishes that one must try when in Shanghai.

The first store opened at Xintiandi and was immediately causing a storm on social media platforms for its 黄鱼面 yellow croaker noodles. I am not too sure about that as I prefer the one from Dingteler 顶特勒粥面馆, which got a Bib Gourmand and cheaper than this one. This was the second branch along Nanjing Pedestrian Road, so you can be sure that it is targeting the tourist crowd.

I came for their 蟹粉葱油拌面 Crab Roe with Scallion Oil Noodles – hairy crab was in the tail end of its seasonal run, and I always love Shanghainese scallion oil noodles. At ¥68 per portion, this was definitely not targeted at the everyday working folks.

The majority of the price was for the 浇头 topping of 蟹粉 crab meat/roe. I had to agree it was a generous portion for what I was paying. The noodles was OK, the scallion oil was not fragrant enough. But the overall portion was not enough for a big eater like me, so I ordered a bowl of wontons.

刀鱼 Knifefish was in season, and everywhere was offering 刀鱼馄饨 knifefish wontons. I had to order one too. Six pieces of wontons per order.

The wonton was the typical Shanghainese wonton – large and full of filling. Knifefish is the ocean knifefish and quite fishy, needed the vinegar to neutralise the fishiness.

Quite good, quite expensive, not bad if you do not want to queue at the popular ones.
