One week in Denver, me and my colleagues from Asia were craving for something familiar. We cannot eat another steak, and we were craving for something simple like dumplings and noodles.

Founded by first generation immigrants to this part of Colorado, Bryan’s Dumpling House is the only authentic Shanghainese style xiaolongbao eatery in town IMHO. The lady of the house was from Shanghai, and the chef/owner was from Chengdu.
Our Lunch Choices
四川酸辣汤 Szechuan Sweet and Sour Soup

First up, Szechuan sweet and sour soup, something hot (temperature wise) and spicy for the -17°C temperature outside. This hot and spicy soup hit the spot, even though I had to add another ladle of chilli oil to spice it up.
虾仁炒饭 Shrimp Fried Rice

We cannot help but order the shrimp friend rice. Not much wokhei, but it was exactly like the ones from Dintaifeng, very eggy and moist.
锅贴 Pan Fried Dumplings

An impulse order, it simply rolled off my tongues as part of the trio that I would always order with soup dumplings. But the 锅贴 pan fried dumplings turned up quite nice.
黑毛猪小笼包 Original Kurobuta Pork Xiao Long Bao

This time round there wasn’t any pinkish coagulated albinium popping out of the xiaolongbao (soup dumpling) like the last time. But I still I wished they were juicier, even if the dumplings did hit the spot.
蒙古牛肉 Mongolian Beef Cubes

This is simply sautéed black pepper beef cubes, I don’t know the association with Mongolia.
红油抄手 Kurobuta Pork Dumpling in Chilli Oil

These Szechuan chilli dumplings were delicious despite their American sizes, but came with the right level of spiciness and sourness from the vinegar.
重庆辣子鸡 Chongqing Spicy Chicken

This was an impulse order, as we didn’t manage to order it the last round. 重庆辣子鸡 Chongqing spicy chicken was crispy and spicy, but not laden with chilli as it would be in Chongqing.
干煸四季豆 Stir-Fried Green Beans & Ground Pork with Garlic

Good wokhei from this simple dish.

This is not Shanghai, and Bryan’s is not Dintaifeng. But this was the most delicious and authentic Chinese food available around here in Denver, period.
