R&G Lounge 嶺南小館 @ San Francisco (2025)

嶺南 Lingnan is the old name for Guangdong region which include Guangzhou and Hong Kong. And this region is famous for Cantonese cuisine 粵菜, one of the four major cuisines of China.

R&G Lounge is located in San Francisco’s historic Chinatown. Established in 1985, it started out as a modest one story restaurant in the basement level and has expanded, over the last 35+ years, to three dining room floors, including a full bar and three spacious VIP private rooms.

From the outside, it’s hard to get a sense of R&G—the facade is spare and softly lit. From the door, you can glimpse a full bar with a TV playing overhead, plus the host waiting to welcome diners.

原盅燉黃毛雞湯 Double Boiled Chicken Soup

The soup was double boiled with chicken, mushrooms, and Virginia ham. It was very flavourful, a bit oily, but always welcomed for the cold evenings in San Francisco.

花雕醉鴿皇 Drunken Squab

The drunken squab was perfectly marinated in Huadiao yellow wine. It was a bit bitter the second time we had this, I guessed because they burnt the wine. Nevertheless this remains my favourite appetiser from R&G.

清蒸游水盲鰽 Steamed Fresh Sea Bass

These farmed seabass are difficult to judge as they can get pretty muddy. But the chefs here nailed it with the perfect size and perfect steaming time. The steamed fish sauce was also superb, not too salty with the right amount of MSG.

鮮蜆蒸水蛋 Steamed Clams & Egg

This is my Darling favourite dish, and R&G consistently nailed it perfectly. Smooth and tender as tofu steamed eggs with fresh clams cooked perfectly. We never failed to order this whenever we come here.

瑤柱扒瓜甫 Dried Scallop with Chinese Melons

This next dish was steamed Chinese melons with spinach topped with dried scallop gravy. It was a rice killer as the gravy was perfect with plain steamed rice.

清炒香港菜心 Sautéed Hong Kong Choysum

The sautéed Hong Kong choysum was surprising too dry and absolutely not oily. It tasted more like boiled vegetables. But being health conscious, that’s how Darling loved it.

楊枝甘露 Mango Pudding with Sago and Pomelo

Mango Pudding with Sago and Pomelo 楊枝甘露 is the classic dessert found in Cantonese restaurant, and it is always a crowdpleaser. It is the same here, and the mango was sweet this time. The captain, recognising us, gave us a complementary bowl of red bean soup boiled with mandarin orange peel that was not too sweet. It was a perfect sweet ending to a wonderful dinner.

Darling and I always ordered the same stuff when we came here for dinner because they executed these dishes so well, particularly the steamed barramundi (which we called Chilean seabass back in Singapore). R&G is now officially our canteen whenever we are downtown because they open till late. Reservation recommended, but the table does turn very quickly.
