It was a wet day, drizzling the whole day. And I was really hungry after spending the afternoon at the nearby Higashi Honganji. I had not had any sushi this trip, so I looked up Tabelog for a nearby sushi restaurant. Sushitofuji scored 3.43, the highest in the vicinity. I was too lazy to walk back to Kyoto Station, so I decided to give it a try.

Sushitofuji is located on the second floor of a commercial building. I arrived around 5.30pm and there was nobody seated at the counter. I looked at the price for the sushi, each piece starts from ¥149 (before tax) with otoro (fatty tuna belly) the most expensive at ¥799. But for all sushi below ¥299, there’s a minimum two pieces per order. So the bill added up very quickly.

The waitress gave me an iPad to place my order in English. I asked for the Japanese menu to make sure I wasn’t missing any special. First thing that came was the clams cooked in sake. The clams were frozen type and the overall taste was too salty.

Sea urchin shipped directly from Hokkaido, but I wasn’t impressed with the quality. They were quite mushy and tasted off.

Next, the fatty tuna belly – I ordered a piece each of the otoro and chutoro. Both were disappointing. So were the mushi-anago, which were very dry and flat.

After Hiroshima, I had been eating kakiage (oyster fry) wherever I went. This particular oyster caught my interest. Banshu-Ako Samurai Oysters are premium, branded single-cultivation oysters grown in the clean, plankton-rich waters of Sakoshi Bay in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. They were definitely succulent and creamy, and the accompanying tartar sauce was so good. The only thing I was satisfied that night.

Then the madai and kanpachi, nothing to shout about, they were about the same as any conveyor belt sushi quality, and at ¥149 per piece, they were the cheapest sushi I ordered that evening.

Disappointed by the quality of the sushi, I decided to call it a night and ordered my last piece, my usual tekka-maki.

Overall, there were so OK pieces sushi, but most were just conveyor belt quality. I believe I can get better ones from a supermarket.

The dinner came up to be around ¥9,000, which was not that cheap considered the quality of what I had and that I was still hungry afterwards. I should have just stuck to the original plan of going to a proper sushi restaurant at the Kyoto Station.
