I have visited Gyu-kaku @ Novena and tried their ala carte menu which was very good. This time the whole gang tried Gyu-kaku @ Marina Square and tried their Wagyu buffet.
With over 600 stores in Japan, Gyu-kaku 牛角 is a very high quality yakiniku franchise that served Japanese yakiniku using mid-range Wagyu cuts. Since it’s first stores in UE Square and Chijmes, the positioning for this store has gone mid-market and prices more approachable for locals.
I usually do not like buffet, but there was a promotion (buy 3 get 1 free, and birthday person get a Wagyu birthday cake) we decided to try it.
I was rather disappointed by their wagyu, definitely not the A4/A5 stuff, more B grade beef. We actually regretted the buffet choice. Should have stuck to ala carte.
The Wagyu Birthday Cake
This is really gimmicky, the cut was horrible as it was almost all fats. But it does oil the grill so that the rest of the meat do not stick to the net.
Because of Covid-19, the mall was almost empty. We were one of 6 tables in the restaurant although we had 12 folks for dinner. The service was attentive but the back kitchen could not catch up with the speed we were eating. Eight of use did not eat pork so they were flexible enough to split our bills into two so that the four that did can continue with the buffet while the rest went ala carte. I left a big tip for their service.
