Treasures – Covered Jar With Design Of Phoenix In Underglaze Brown (Yuan Dynasty)

A major export item from China, the existence of humble Leizhou wares is very rare.

A brown jar that looks unappealing, something that is sold in stores for the commoners, was one of the largest export from China in the 12th-14th century on the Maritime Silk Road to the West and surrounding regions. It is one of the Top 10 treasures of Guangdong Museum by popular votes.

The Covered Jar With Design Of Phoenix In Underglaze Brown is decorated with rich layers, lively and smooth lines, rigorous composition that echoes each other. It is an exquisite work. In 1957, it was unearthed in the tomb of Xihu Reservoir District, Leicheng City. This artefact stands out as it is far more exquisite than the glazed Leizhou wares in the same period.

This form of painted porcelain had many kinds of implements, among which pots. pillows and coffins were the most representative, and the paintings on porcelain had strong folk customs and cultural characteristics.

Leizhou Peninsula is one of the important bases for the production of ceramics in ancient Guangdong. Its ceramics are collectively known as Leizhou ware 雷州瓷, which is as famous as Guangzhou ware 广瓷 and Chaozhou ware 潮州瓷, and is collectively known as the three major kilns in Guangdong.

About Leizhou Kiln 雷州窑

The Leizhou kiln 雷州窑 in Guangdong Province was ever famous for porcelain manufacturing. High-quality porcelain products in Leizhou kiln were produced for export, a core business of the Maritime trade. The polychrome ceramics from were typically of high-temperature over-glazed craftsmanship, and the brown colour was caused by iron ions. 

Leizhou Peninsula has a long history of ceramic production. According to the historical literature and archaeological excavation, the local porcelain industry in the Leizhou kiln began to form in the Tang dynasty (618-907), and arrived at its very summit in the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties before declining during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).

In the Tang Dynasty, the factories produced bowls, plates, cans and other household utensils, and the products were mainly celadon with greenish yellow glaze. In the Song and Yuan dynasties, besides celadon production, by introducing the manufacturing technology of the Cizhou kiln and Jizhou kiln, potters successfully created the polychrome ceramics
