Song Ok 송옥 @ Seoul

I would not have gone to this noodle sikdang if not for a local bringing me there. It’s too much stress to explain to the ajummas what I want.

My fear is totally unfounded, as Song Ok sells only two things for over 40 years – memil guksu 메밀국수 (cold buckwheat noodles) served with a dipping sauce, and udon (thick wheat-flour noodles) that is available hot or cold.

Once you are seated, they’ll bring out their pickled radish (danmooji). Note that this is going to be the only side dish you get no matter what noodle dish or how many noodle dishes you order. You can at least give them credit for making their danmooji in-house so you’re not served that odd neon yellow danmooji from factories.

If you are imagining zaru soba ざるそば, it is not (even if the menu translated it to be so). Korean buckwheat noodles 메밀 (guksu) are more chewy and remain so even after chilled. The single portion came with two trays of noodles topped with shredded dried seaweed 김 (gim).

The soy dashi broth is in the stainless steel kettle on the side and you are free to pour yourself a bowl of the dipping sauce in the empty bowl and add daikon (white radish) mash and scallions as you like it. Their pleasing broth is made with bold-tasting katsuobushi (a traditional Japanese soup base) and soy sauce. To eat it, just dip the noodles into the sauce and slurp. If you want more kick, feel free to add mustard provided.

It is a representative buckwheat soba restaurant in Seoul. Currently, there is also a branch in Garosu-gil. Compared to another specialist restaurant Yurimmyeon, Song Ok’s price is inexpensive, and it is a restaurant that boasts a history and tradition.
