Three Joy Roasted Goose 三悅燒鵝 @ North Point

I was staying in North Point and was looking for some proper Siu Mei 燒味. STHe concierge pointed me to 棋哥燒鵝餐室, but I stumbled to something along that stretch that looked promising.

Three Joy Roasted Goose 三悅燒鵝 was packed with the lunchtime crowd, but instead of the office workers, it was full of students from the nearby secondary school in their uniforms. Anything with students is usually cheap and good.

It’s a journey into a time-honoured tradition that transforms poultry into poetry. Marinated in a symphony of spices and sauces, these birds are expertly roasted over an open fire or in a rotisserie oven. Imagine biting into a crispy skin to discover succulent, flavourful meat underneath. And during lunchtime, these roast restaurants will offer a lunch set that comes with a soup and a drink.

Roasted goose embodies Hong Kong’s culinary art. Marinated in an array of spices, the goose is roasted in a furnace, leading to a remarkable contrast of textures – a crispy exterior encompassing tender, juicy meat. Serving usually includes a side of tangy plum sauce, offering a sweet and sour contrast to the savoury goose.

Along with the lunch set was a bowl of 老火靚湯 daily boiled soup, which for that afternoon was a mung bean pork rib soup.

I couldn’t resist but to order an a la carte portion of a double combination of BBQ meat called “sheung p’ng” 雙拼 to satisfy my craving for these delicious meat. 燒乳豬 BBQ Suckling Pig has always been one of my favourite (the other being roast goose), and I would always order a portion to try if it’s available. Their suckling pig was competent but I do prefer it to be less fatty. Their 肥叉燒 Fatty BBQ Pork “Charsiu” had been compared with Sun Kwai Heung 新桂香 in Chai Wan, considered the best in HK. The sides were not burnt and the fattiness and sweetness of the charsiu was spot on.

This is a delightful encounter with the soul of Hong Kong – an encounter one must not miss while in this vibrant city. The meal was delicious and not expensive. I would definitely come back to it versus the famous ones.
