Grilled fish hotpot has been the craze in China. Seeking Fish 探鱼 has opened over 120 outlets all over China and this one is just below our Beijing office. Happened to go for a welcome lunch for a new colleague.
Everyone was given complimentary tidbits that included a quartet of dried fruits.
We ordered four appetisers – 蒜泥青瓜、四川泡菜、辣卤凤爪 、成都棒棒鸡 chicken in chilli sauce, spicy chicken feet, cucumber with minced garlic, Sichuan pickles
毛血旺烤凌波鱼 Grilled fish with blood curd in chilli sauce was really tasty. They were generous with the blood curd and pig offals.
酱香烤凌波鱼 Grilled fish with soy sauce was the savoury version of the other one. Beware, it will get too salty towards the end of the meal.
宽粉、冻豆腐、魔芋、午餐肉 sweet potato noodles, frozen bean curd, konjac, luncheon meat were add ons that can be added to the grilled fish.
探鱼春卷 spring roll was just a deep fried spring roll wrap. Almost cannot taste the filling.
蒜蓉烤扇贝 grilled scallops was a bit too wet. The flavour was just garlicky and nothing else.
串烤虾 grilled shrimps did not go well. The shell was sticking to the flesh and overall it was overcooked.
Service standards in China have risen by leaps and bounds in recent time, but the only place that has not caught up is still Beijing. The staff was not really responsive, and they seemed to be just standing around. Food was just so-so.
