Paulaner Bräuhaus @ Jakarta

Located at the Kempinski Jakarta, Paulaner Bräuhaus is a popular meet-up place for IT professionals working around that area, which is the vertical Silicon Valley of Jakarta.

The only microbrewery restaurant in the country, Paulaner Bräuhaus Jakarta is a 200-seat establishment that serves traditional Bavarian food and the famed German beer, which is made only with authentic imported ingredients.

Original Pretzel

Served with butter

Original Pretzel

Pretzel fresh from the oven, still warn and fragrant served simply with butter on the side. Having the rock salt on top of the pretzel allows it to have that hint of saltiness to balance the flavour. I usually eat it with yellow mustard, strange but it was said to be the traditional way they do it in München.

Bavarian Sausages Platter

4 Nuremberg sausages, 2 Debrecener sausages, 2 Vienna sausages and 2 Thuringian sausages served with French fries

Bavarian Sausages Platter

Bavarian Sausages Platter came with four different sausages (L to R):

  • Nuremberger Sausages or Nürnberger Bratwurst are the best German sausage IMHO. Produced with pork without tendons and rind as well as bacon, Nuremberg sausages are flavoured with marjoram, parboiled and then grilled.
  • Vienna sausage is a thin parboiled sausage traditionally made of pork and beef in a casing of sheep’s intestine, then given a low-temperature smoking.
  • Thüringer Rostbratwurst is German pork and veal sausage from Thuringia with rich tradition. The first documented reference dates back to 1404. Only sausages made in Thuringia can be called a Thüringer Bratwurst.
  • Debrecener sausage is a pork sausage of uniform fine texture and reddish-orange colour, named after the Hungarian city of Debrecen.

Traditional Bavarian White Sausages “Weisswurst”

Traditional Bavarian White Sausages “Weisswurst”

In Munich, Weißwurst, a white sausage of veal and pork fat, is typically eaten for breakfast with some Bavarian mustard and a pretzel. A Bratwurst is a coarser ground sausage, much the same texture as hamburger or mince, and stuffed into a casing. It is traditionally grilled over coals or pan fried. A Weißwurst (or Bockwurst) is gone a further step and ground to a puree and has certain spices before it is shot into the casing.

Crispy Pork Knuckle

Served with sauerkraut, bread dumplings and gravy

Crispy Pork Knuckle

Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) are roasted pork hocks. The textures are usually amazing — über crispy skin on the pork meat. It’s super filling, I always had a hard time finishing it.

Their version was served with sauerkraut, brad dumplings and gravy, the crispy skin sadly was not crispy. The pork meat was rather tough and dry, and needed the sauce to make it palatable.

Despite being the most populous Muslim country in the world, Indonesia has adopted a tolerant version of approach that allowed all kinds of cuisine to flourish. Being under the same management as Kempinski Hotel Jakarta, you wonder if the restaurant is as good as people say. Only market forces will dictate what kind of restaurants will survive.
