Dragon Seafood 李海泉 @ Bangkok

You can see Dragon Seafood right across from CentralWorld Bangkok. It looked like a tourist’s trap but it isn’t. This was my first time there.

Came to Dragon Seafood with my colleagues for a quick dinner before we went back to rehearse for a huge conference the next day because it was really close to our hotel. The location was superb as it was right at one corner the golden triangle of the Four-Face Buddha shrine.

Grilled mixed seafood

We wanted to order grilled river shrimps, which is always good because you get live shrimps and when grilled with salt it turned into something really delicious. Then we also wanted cockles and mussels and squid – so they suggested we get a grilled mixed seafood, which had everything. But because of the time to grill for each seafood is different, the doneness for the shellfish and squid was all screwed up. Only the shrimp turned up nice.

Thai green papaya salad (som tum)

Rather simple salad, I have tasted better som tum in food courts and night markets.

Thai spicy soup with shrimp

Who can resist a bowl of tomyum koong. They have a clear version, which is rare in other countries, that is unexpectingly spicy. But my guests would not be able to handle that level of spice, so we stuck to the common version.

River shrimp had no taste

The soup was really tasty, but the taste has not permeated into the shrimps.

Stir-fried Carb with salty egg

I decided to throw a curve-ball to my unsuspecting foreign guest with this craze of the moment – salted egg. Instead to the usual curry crab, I ordered a salted egg crab, which game the sweet mud crab a level of salty goodness and umami that blew their mind.

Steamed Sea-bass with lemon chilli sauce

Call it barracuda or sea bass, but they don’t it like the Thai. The lemongrass taste took away the muddiness of farmed fish. The sour taste from Thai lime helped with our appetite wanting more. And the garlic and chilli were finishing touches.

Sautéed water spinach

Unlike the Peranakan or Malay version, the prawn paste was not overwhelming. And the wokhei was superb.

Bake rice in pineapple

The only disappointment for the evening. The pineapple rice was too moist and too sweet.

A wise man once told me, “What you never try, you never miss.” Will come again next time, now that we have tried.
