Chapitô @ Lisbon

An original, unique and artistic way to get a view of Lisbon. Climb up one of the city’s most iconic streets to discover a place with a special panoramic vista of the city.

If you didn’t know it was there, you might walk right past it on your way up to Lisbon’s castle, the Castelo de S. Jorge, but that would be a mistake.  Chapitô has one of the best views of Lisbon, but you don’t have to know how to juggle to enjoy it. Unique anywhere in the country, it is totally dedicated to teaching circus arts and has also achieved the amazing feat of creating an original restaurant with an incomparable view of the city.

My table had an excellent view looking out over the buildings below which sloped down to the water. The Portuguese-influenced food was surprising good and the service impeccable, but it was the atmosphere and the view from the giant windows that were the most impressive features.

Enter through the shop on the street and then go downstairs: don’t try to enter via the stairs from the street itself.

Chapitô the circus school

The mixture of a bohemian air and artistic creativity that permeate the room is intoxicating and inspires utter awe. You can also drop in during the day for a light meal and sit and watch Lisbon breathe. Even if it takes your own breath away.

There is Chapitô (the terrace and casual outdoor dining) and there is Chapitô á Mesa, the slightly more formal restaurant inside and upstairs behind the service counter/cash register. This review relates to Chapitô.

Ameijoas à Bulhão Pato

Portuguese Clams with White Wine

Named after a 19th century poet (Raimundo António de Bulhão Pato to be precise), bulhão pato is a style of serving clams. A tasty starter, these clams are usually brought out alongside toasted bread where dripping lemon, parsley, and shellfish meat can be cleanly mopped up. This is what we call the simple pleasures of life.

Lombo de Bacalhau com alho e Batata Nova com sal

Cod Loin with garlic and New Potato with salt

Chef José Maria Gomes uses Portuguese ingredients and culinary traditions to create original updates of well-loved dishes. The menu varies with the season, but there’s always the Portuguese staple of Bacalhau. t has a subtle, sweet flavor and is very firm once the sodium has been removed.

Chapitô à Mesa is a unique little location that you’ll remember as one of those hidden gems in Lisbon. I guarantee you’ll recommend it to all your friends.
