The new crown jewel (pun intended) of Changi Airport is the multi-billion shopping mall within the airport called Jewel. The intention is allow the tourist who has checked out from their hotel to be able to do an early check-in here and then spend their remaining Sing dollars in a massive complex that has many restaurants, shopping, supermarket and an indoor adventure park.
Herit8ge is a new concept restaurant that bring together Singaporean favourites in with a modern twist, Dishes like
Truffle Carrot Cake Sticks, radish cake infused with truffle oil, deep fried till golden brown.
Take the radish cake, which we wrongly call it carrot cake for all our lives, batter it and then deep-fried. Yummy with the aioli.
Bak Chor Mee Salad, garden greens tossed in balsamic vinegar dressing wth stir-fried minced pork, mushrooms and onions, topped with fried shallots.
Interesting salad as it tasted like bak chor mee.
Kong Bak Bao in Mexican Style, braised pork belly in local herbs with calcium and onion sandwiched between fried bun with frisbee lettuce leaves.
In a deep-fried Chinese bun 合嘴包 that you would eat with braised pork like 扣肉包, the ingredient is chopped pork belly like the one they used for Taiwanese braised pork rice. But the sauce is a spicy salsa. I didn’t enjoy it, but my princess loved it.
The Empress Pasta, king prawns coated with butter cereal, tossed with cream-based spaghetti and topped with friend man-you, cereal crumbs, curry leaves and chilli padi.
It’s pasta carbonara meet cereal coated prawns 麥片蝦. The pasta with curry leaves is an interesting combination.
Lotus Treasure, a creamy mixture of rice, braised pork belly, carrots and onions, topped with shredded mozzarella cheese, wrapped in lotus leaf and oven-baked to perfection.
It is like Cantonese lotus rice meet Taiwanese braised pork rice 滷肉飯 meet Italian baked rice. Firstly, the braised pork rice was delicious. Then, the lotus leaf has enhanced the flavour further like 荷葉飯. But the cheese was out of place.
The portion is sufficient to share but the cheese makes it difficult for one to eat more than a mouthful. Scrap the cheese aside and everything will be alright.
Other dishes we have not tasted
Macho Nacho, tortilla chips topped with spicy ground chickened ancho cheese.
Charsiu-licious, pork ribs glazed with char siu BBQ sauce, oven-baked to perfection and served with kueh tupat rice and nyonya achar.
Valrhona Chocolate Blackout, moist chocolate cake made with Valrhona Guanaja chocolate, topped with chocolate sprinkles.
Retro Style Red Velvet, red velvet cake layered with thick-rich cream cheese, finished with homemade piping jelly to replicate the charm of old-school cakes.
Yam Cake, inspired by classic Teochew dessert, Orh Nee (taro paste), and the western contemporary carrot cake, the yam-infused genoise sponge cake topped with roasted coconut slices.
Dining under the canopy
At the canopy level of Jewel, Herit8ge is facing the same problems as the rest of the restaurants at the same lace – lack of manpower. I think to force the restaurants to open 24 hours have taken a toll on the service quality. While the food has maintained a certain standard, I find the service lacking even when the place was empty.
During the day, the sun shone so brightly onto the seating area, it was difficult to open one eyes. Also the location of the restaurant next to the orchids with their fragrant isn’t ideal, as it affected the enjoyment of the food. I would try again, perhaps in the evening when the sun isn’t so bright.
