What a Michelin Bib Gourmand will do to your business? Fame and fortune and rapid franchising across the island.
Song Fa Bak Kut Teh would not be on the gourmand’s list of best bak kut teh in Singapore. Some like Ng Ah Sio, some like Ya Hua, but none of my friends would say Song Fa, not until they got their Bib Gourmand.

Since the moment they got a Bib Gourmand mention in the Michelin Singapore guide for their BKT served at their North Bridge Road outlet, they have expanded around the island with outlets in every corner. This store we went to was not the famous store, but these days everything comes from their central kitchens so it should be the same.
Prime Spare Ribs Soup

I was not expecting anything spectacular, but still this was underwhelming. Two pieces of ribs for $12, and the ribs were overcooked. The soup was not as peppery as Ng Ah Sio but not as flavourful as Ya Hwa. It is still an above average soup – you can drink as much soup as you want.
Pig’s Kidney Soup

Luckily for me, the kidney soup was good, but again the portion was somewhat very small.
Braised Large Intestine

This was braised until very soft and flavourful, exceptional.
Salted Vegetables

Too salty.
Dough Fritters

I liked their dough fritters, crispy and stale. That’s how it should be as it gets resurrected in the hot peppery soup.
Mee Sua

I did not have rice but ordered their mee sua instead. Perfect with BKT soup.
Overall, it was an above average standard, very pricey, good service. You can see why it is popular (accessible and everywhere), but I can’t see why it deserves the Michelin.
