This is a visit to Victory restaurant in Shenzhen, but not at my usual location at Lychee Garden (or Snake Garden).
I really enjoy my visits to Victory Restaurant over the years I have been in Shenzhen, so it was quite normal for me to go this one near my hotel.
Firstly, the decor was much more fancier. However, the price remains the same as the original. But how’s the food?
广式烧味拼盘 Cantonese-style Roast Meat Platter
We started with a roast meat platter. It was a good variety of choices, a bit fo everything – roast duck, soy sauce chicken, braised beef shank, steamed chicken, char siew, roast pork belly. I enjoyed the pork belly, the crackling remained crispy. The roast duck was pretty good as well.
剁椒鱼头 Hunan-style Steamed Fishhead
When it was served, we regretted our choice. The steamed fish head was quite dry. It was obvious that the chopped chilli has not penetrated the flesh of the fish. I should have known to stick to Cantonese food in a Cantonese restaurant.
猪肺大骨汤 Pig’s Lung Soup
It has been a soup that I ordered every time I was there. It turned out quite bland.
虾酱啫芥兰菜 Kailan with Prawn Paste
Claypot is a specialty of Victory, and they do it competently here in this restaurant. The kailan was very fresh and crunchy, and the prawn paste did not overpower the entire dish. Finished everything in the pot.
腊味煲仔饭 Preserved Meat Claypot Rice
Enjoyed the use of two types of Chinese sausages in this classic claypot rice – the standard pork sausage as well as the liver pate sausage. The liver version can be quite strong for the unacquainted, but when you get use to it, you will always be looking out for it. I still keep a couple in my fridge if I can get my hand on them when I travel to Hong Kong.
Overall, the decor is better than the original, but the service and food are not. Stick to their signature dishes and claypots, they are still delivered to standard in this branch.
